Biophilic and proud: Why at GlassForest we are PDA with our love for nature

Biophilia, the innate human tendency to connect with nature, has been a driving force behind countless artistic expressions. And glass, with its unique properties of transparency, translucency, and malleability has allured artists for years. Now imagine the magic when you combine the two!

You get a perfect medium to capture and reflect the essence of the natural world, and we wouldn’t miss this for life.

We have been asked time and again as to what inspires us when we showcase our work. Well, we thought it was quite evident but incase it isn’t- it is biophilia.

What is Biophilia?

Biophilia is the idea that humans possess an innate tendency to seek connections with nature. This connection can range from a simple appreciation of natural beauty to a deep emotional bond with the natural world. This is probably also why our brand is called GlassForest. It combines our love for two things we greatly adore- glass and nature!

The Biophilic Influence on Glass Work

Glass artists have long recognized the power of glass to evoke a sense of wonder and connection to nature. By manipulating glass, they can create works that mimic natural forms, simulate natural light, or simply evoke the feeling of being outdoors. And it’s a beautiful process.

So, today, we thought a little breakup of how we draw our influences would be great to understand GlassForest

Natural Forms and Patterns: We often draw inspiration from the natural world, creating pieces that mimic the shapes of leaves, flowers, or even the flowing curves of water. It is both an unending challenge and an unending joy to see it come through.

Light and Shadow: Glass is a master of light and shadow. By manipulating the thickness and texture of glass, we create stunning visual effects that evoke the play of light in nature.

Texture and Surface: Glass can be textured to mimic the surface of bark, stone, or water, adding depth and dimension to the piece. This is visible in our installations

Color and Transparency: By carefully selecting and combining colors, we create pieces that evoke the vibrant hues of nature, from the deep blues of the ocean to the fiery reds of autumn leaves. Our last installation was an ode to the deep sea flora and we used all the above techniques to bring our collection to life.

And time and again, we have fallen in love with the process

The variation of transparency and translucency, with little changes, the malleability, the versatility and most importantly- the durability of it all! Somehow glass also reminds us a lot of life in general. A thing so beautiful, so timeless and yet so fragile. But that’s a topic for another day.

For today, it is Biophilia- and what defines us as a brand and designs that not only delight the eye but also nourish the soul. As we continue to spend more time indoors, it's increasingly important to find ways to connect with nature, and glass art offers a beautiful and enduring way to do just that.
